Frequently Asked Questions
I heard AlexSandra’s Vintage Emporium offers alterations. Is this true?
Yes, I do alterations on many different types of dresses and gowns, including bridal. As each dress is different and the necessary alterations vary, estimates are not given over the phone or internet. I always suggest bringing the garment you desire to alter into the Emporium during business hours (Fridays 12-7 Saturdays 11-6 and Sundays 12-4) for a consultation. You may also call for an appointment at a time more convenient for your schedule.
You may want to specify what you would like altered (the type of dress: Bridal, casual, suit etc) and what needs to be done (hem, taken in, straps shortened, bustle, etc). The more information you give me, the better guesstimate I can give you. Is it lined? Is the bodice beaded? Is it strapless? Does the zipper need to be moved? These are all more complimented alterations and are there by more expensive. I do not stand by any quotes given on a dress I have not personally seen with my own two eyes. As I am sure you have experienced, it is difficult to take everything into consideration over the internets.
For vintage and antique garments that you desire to have restyled, a consultation by me with the garment is suggested. Many ideas and a good deal of brainstorming comes out of such meetings. Expect a $50 consultation fee to be charged, although it is occasionally waved.
What do I need to bring to an alteration fitting?
If you desire to have a garment that I did not create for you altered, you will need to bring a few things to your first fitting. It is imperative that you have your shoes you plan to wear with the garment and what you will wear under the dress. Planning on wearing a corcette? Make sure you get it first. Every undergarment reshapes the bust in such a manner that is makes a difference in fit. It is highly recommended that you find a supportive undergarment to accentuate your curves. I want you to look your best in any dress I have spent time fitting specifically to you and what you wear under a dress has a surprising impact on the end result.
How long do alterations take?
Simple alterations can be done in two weeks, on average. Formal and/or bridal gowns can require a four weeks or more, depending on your availability and how much work must be done. It is NEVER too early to start on a sewing or alteration project. The sign does not say Hems in a Hurry. I will tell you when you are asking too much. Rush orders can be accomplished, but are costly. Planning ahead saves everyone time and eliminates last minute surprises.
I am stuck on a project I started but don’t think I can finish. Can you help me?
But of course.
For projects that need to be finished or refashioned we recommend an appointment. There is a charge of $50 as a consulting fee for this meeting of the minds. Sometimes after having a long chat with someone, we come up with a solution to a sewing problem that does not require any further work by me. This small consulting fee makes giving you endless ideas and referrals worth my time.
I’d like to learn to sew or improve my already exising skills. Do you teach classes?
Yes, there are sewing lessons available at AlexSandra’s Vintage Emporium. Need to learn how to thread your sewing machine? Too imtimidated by zippers? Sleeves? You bring a problem and I will help you solve it yourself. Classes are in three hour chunks in $10 an hour segments. Come for one hour for $10, two hours for $20 or three for $30. Check the events on your right for further details. Currently, lessons are on Wednesday nights from 6-9 in the evening.
